How old should baby be?
Ideally your newborn will be between one and four weeks old. If your baby is older than that it's perfectly fine. Once your baby is about two months, they may not be as sleepy for the sleeping poses. That's ok if you want pictures while they are awake, or we might get lucky and they sleep on demand. Three months is also wonderful because then your baby can often smile at you. So really between 1 week old to 3 months old works. Older than that and you can schedule a shorter children's portrait session.
What to wear?
Mom and Dad look best in a plain white or cream sweater, button down shirt, or dressy shirt. No t-shirts, logos, or colors. Why? This is your newborn session and the focus is all about your new baby. You want your baby to stand out more than the clothing. Infact, your baby often looks best just in a diaper, wrapped in a blanket to cover the diaper. Black or cream pants, or jeans are fine for Mom and Dad because very little of the pants will show in the pictures. No need for Mom and Dad to match, but coordinating looks great. For example, Mom and Dad in different styles of white or cream sweaters.
Outfit styles change but these pictures will adorn your walls forever. Also, sticking with cream or white for the parent's outfits gives a ton of flexibility for wrapping the newborn in a soft pink, blue, sage, cream, white blanket, etc. Or, even a blanket with a bit of pattern.
What to bring?
- a pacifier, if your baby uses one
- a stocked diaper bag
- a bottle, for helping your baby fall asleep when we are ready for sleeping poses
- a special blanket if you want it in the photos (size 64x16 inches or larger is ideal)
- a special outfit such as a Christening outfit, if it fits and you want it in the pictures
- if you want your baby in a special outfit please text me a pic. of the outfit in advance so I can have coordinating items ready
Who to bring?
Mom and Dad are ideal so we can get pictures with both parents. The newborn's siblings are also welcome to be in a few pictures. We will be focusing on pictures of your baby and will not have extra time for indidual sibling pics or extended family. You can schedule additional time for an extra fee if you wish, or schedule an additional session.
If you have little ones that will be in the pictures, please consider bringing someone who can take them home once they have been photographed with your baby. The session is extra long and your young children may not have that much good behavior in them.
What decisions to make before you come?
- try to book your session at the time of day your baby is the happiest
- give yourself extra time so you can be on time and because the session may run a bit overtime
- take a look at the website to get an idea of what type of newborn session you want: baby on a blanket, baby swaddled in a blanket, baby swaddled and styled in a basket with a backdrop, etc.
- what colors you want for the blankets, backdrops, etc.
- let me know in advance what you want so I can have it all ready for you
- or I will choose several options for you to decide on at your session
